Croatia

Sibenik, Zadar, Plitvice Lakes, Dubrovnik, Elaphiti Islands

Our 10 Day Itinerary

Croatia is one of Europe's most best kept secrets, offering a stunning blend of crystal-clear Adriatic waters, ancient walled cities, and lush landscapes. From the medieval streets of Dubrovnik to the cascading waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes, we set out to explore only a small part of the country. Traveling from Split, up though several coastal towns and on to the National Park, and then back to the coast in Dubrovnik where we slept on a catamaran for 3 nights. The coastline stretches over 1,700 kilometers and is dotted with more than a thousand islands, making it a paradise for boaters and adventure seekers.

Beyond its natural beauty, Croatia has overcome its tumultuous past, breaking away from Yugoslavia and communism in the 1990's. It declared independence in 1991, triggering a major conflict in which Croatia eventually regained control of its territory. Now part of the EU, Croatia is a safe and modern destination, welcoming to tourists who seek out its beautiful coastline. Dubrovnik's old city is famous as the filming location for King's Landing in Game of Thrones, and you can even take a tour featuring the sights. With incredible food, warm hospitality, and millennia of history packed into a relatively small country, Croatia genuinely has something for every kind of traveler.

Currency, Language and Religion

Croatia uses the Euro, having made the switch from its former currency, the Kuna. Even though it joined the EU in 2013, they only recently fully adopted the Euro, in 2023. This makes traveling in Croatia simple for Europeans and other travelers alike. The official language is Croatian, a South Slavic language written in the Latin alphabet. It's closely related to Serbian and Bosnian. English is widely spoken in tourist areas and we had no trouble getting around. We easily picked up the greeting by many locals of Dobar Dan (good day) and Hvala (thank you).

The majority of Croatians identify as Roman Catholic but remain relaxed and welcoming. We noticed a presence of beautiful churches, many older and historic around the area.
