Currency and Language

Singapore uses the Singapore dollar which is currently about 1 SGD to 0.75 USD. It has historically been in this range for some time. We decided to take about $150 USD worth of Singapore dollars at the airport. Overall, most places accept and even prefer credit cards or tap to pay, so you could probably get by with very minimal cash if needed. English is widely spoken and the most common language in Singapore, followed by Chinese Mandarin, then Malay.

Malasia's currency is the Malaysian Ringgit, which is currently 4.5 MYR to 1 USD. We found things like food and transportation to be cheaper in Malaysia than Singapore. The people of Malaysia speak Malay, with most that we interacted with speaking English as well, some better than others. Right away, we noticed that a majority of Malaysian women were wearing a hijab, or head covering. In fact, Malaysia is about 65% Muslim, followed by Buddhist, Christian and Hindu.

Day 3: Singapore

We had a full day in Singapore to see as much as we could see before getting too tired. We found getting around Singapore to be really easy with using the metro. They have a super easy system set up where you don't even have to pre-purchase any tickets or a card anymore. You simply use the tap on your phone as you enter, and then use the same tap on the way out and it will charge you the appropriate amount. We had no idea what that was until we looked it up, but it wasn't much.

The city in Singapore is clean and safe to get around and we had no trouble navigating. We took a long walk from our hotel which took us over a cool pedestrian bridge leading to the Art Science building, famously shaped like a lotus flower. You could also see the giant Marina Bay Sands hotel that has a boat-like shape on top and a famous infinity pool. From there, we visited Gardens By the Bay for several hours, details below. That made us pretty hungry and so we visited the Hawker center, where we had several dishes, followed by a walk through chinatown, back to our hotel while it rained and then dinner in Little India.
